The rinking carnival at the Theatre Royal last evening was well attended, anc the management are to be congratulated upon the success of the function. A large number of ladies and gentlemen were in fancy costume, and the scene on the floor during the evening was a bright and animated one. Amongst the most striking of the ladies’ costumes were those worn by Mrs 0. Sandlant, Misses Driller (2), Sykes (2), and Johnston. Miss Sykes, who was attired in a handsome Maori costume, attracted agreat deal of attention, and her impersonation of the character was the subject of admiration. Miss Driller made a pretty flower girl. Amongst the most noticeable of the gentlemen .in fancy costume were Messrs Shierlaw, Yosper, McClure, Pierre, Doyle, Skipworth, Cov (2;, Graham, Hoiby, Newey, Morrell, Beere, Corbett, Harding, and Somervell. During the evening several races took place. Excellent music was provided during the evening, and provoked a good deal of interest. The chief event was the mile, which brought- out a field of three, Messrs Kirk, Newey, and Eaton competing. The pace was made a clinker from the start, and all the competitors had two or three falls. In the last lap Kirk had a good lead, and won comfortably from Eaton.

Any undue limitation of the uses of motor-cars will he most severely felt by the rural districts and that the colony has as yet had practically no experience in this direction is all the more reason why Parliament should not indulge in ill-ad-vised legislation which may delay a most desirable consummation. Auckland Herald.
If it be the experience of other democratic communities that a second chamber, elected upon a common franchise, hut from wider electorates, has a useful place in modern democracy, it would bo well for us to consider such a reform in this colony. For our present Legislative Council has no apparent place in our political system. The Australian House of Representatives has very evidently a restraining force 11 in another place our New Zealand House of Representatives has none —so long as it does the bidding of the present Administration. -—Auckland Herald.
