Ritchie, the miners’ secretary at Kembla, said at the inquest he was satisfied the disaster was caused by gas in the first instance, added to by coal dust. There were few safety lamps in the mine, but they were in a bad state The oil used was of bad quality, and the wicks were unsuitable.
