FOOTBALL

DEFEAT OF THE JUNIORS,

| Special to Timks.l Napier, last night. Tho junior rep. match Poverty Day v. Hawke's Day was played this afternoon in tho presence of a fair number of spectators, and resulted in a win for Ifawko’a Day by ‘2l points (five tries, ono of which was converted, and a potted goal) to nil. Tho gamo was uninteresting, being mainly of » forward character. Tho backs on both sides wero weak. The local forwards oxcollod on the line Out and fast looso rushes, which mainly contributed to the score. Tho visitors gut the ball mostly from the serum, but trie passing was nullified by running across the fiold without gaining ground. The local tackling was also good. Tho visitors had several shots at goal from penalties and marks, but the placekicking on both sides was wretched. Among the visitors Witty, Third, Moore, Hansen, Wallace, and Driller were most prominent. Tho game was very friendly, and thcro wore no accidents. Mr Hibson was roforeo.

Tho Gisbomo boys were hospitably treated by the homo authorities.

By Telegraph—Pross Association. Napier, last night.

Tho football match between the Poverty Day and Hawke’s Day junior representatives was played bore this afternoon. Tho weather was lino, and there was a fair attendance. Tho gumo was in favor of Hawko’s Day uil through, tho locul men playing with moro combination than their opponents. Hawko’s Day won by 21 points to nil. THE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM.

Tho rop. team to visit Gisborne next wook will bo picked to-morrow night. With tho exception of Carlson, who cannot tako tho trip, and two players injured in ,thn last match, tho team will probably bo tho ssmo as pla.yod Otago, and a fast ono may bo reckoned upon. TO-DAY’S Till A L MATCH. At 8 o’clock this afternoon, tho linal trial match will bo commenced on Victoria Domain, and this evening Messrs A. W. Hoes, it. Colo, J. A. Eaton, arid W. Gibson will select tho l’ovort.y Day representative toam, which plays Iluwko's Day bore on Saturday next, p’rom tho way in which tho mon shaped on Saturday last, when playing on a wet and soddon ground and handling a greasy ball, it is but natural to oxpect that a first-class exhibition of Bugby football will bo given this aftornoon. Two fiuo fiftoons tako tho field, and tho selectors will have a by no means light task when they sit down to make tbo final solcction.

For tho position of full-back, thcro are two good mon opposed to ouch othor in Waitui and Kelly. Should neither of thoso perform satisfactorily, thoro are capablo men to fall back upon in C. Hepburn and W. Sharp, who have played soundly and woll for their clubs throughout tho season. On tho throo quarter line, dkeot, Porter, and To Roina oppose Dali, Watono, and Nolan, and throo good mon should bo solectod from tho six. I expect to sec tho throo-quarters givo a bettor exhibition today. Thoir great fault is playing too far apart, and consequently having to pass too far. Thoy could also back up with more judgment, and pass sharp and low. Of tho halves, J. Ilay, who sustained an injury in last Saturday’s game, will bo an nbsenteo to-day, but will probably bo available for tho big match, if deemed worthy of selection. Poananga and E. Johnson are tho other two halves on the A side. Thoy aro opposed by Drown and ■\y. Hay, and some good work should bo , near tho scrum. Of the forwards, it is sufficient to say ■'that two fine sets oppose each other, v atid that the men who play best will be selected.

No charge will be made for admission, and it is expected that taere will be a very large attendance, as more interest is being taken in the selection of the representative team this season, than has been shown for years.
