VILLANY AND WIT

A THIEF AND HIS DUPE.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. " We hereby promise to pay you th§. sum of £lO when the sun goes down ... the stage.” Such was the text of an alleged hank note produced in evidence at the Police Couit, and which Thomas Bell, a young man recently arrived from Sydney, traded on an unsuspecting foreigner as genuine. Bell had represented to his dupe that he was the son of a Waikato farmer, and on the strength of being about to send the unfortunate victim to his parents farm for employment, borrowed £7 on the note. Accused pleaded guilty. “ I am afraid the son will have to go up to the Supremo Court for sentence,” remarked His Worship. The amusing feature of the case was that the police called a bank official to prove that the “ note ” was not genuine.
