The question of a tramway to tho beach for tho purpose of getting metal is also occupying tho Council’s attention. Wellington, last night. Dr Torrey and Mr Alexander, from America, are conducting a very successful mission in the city. Tho audiences are crowded, and many are unable to obtain admission. Christchurch, last night. Tho semi-final of the Golf Championship was played this morning. C. E. S. Gillies, of Auckland, beat It. Duncan, of Wellington, 3up and 2 to play. 8. H. Gollan, Napier, beat J. Harold, Wanganui, 2 all, levol at the 18th hole, and it was only at the 20th that Gollan won. Dunedin, last night. At tho Polico Court, the keeper of a femalo refuge was charged with failing to register. The matron pleaded guilty, and said if the institution was compelled to register it must close down on Saturday, as it could not carry on under the Act. She was fined Is. The Magistrate expressed regret that the institution could not be exempted. Feilding, last night. At' tho Feilding Industrial Association meeting last night, the rules and schedule wove adopted, and it was decided to hold a five-days’ exhibition. One hundred pounds guarantee was subscribed in the room, and an additional £l5O is required to bo obtained by a canvass of tho town. Wairoa, last night. Mr'Pringle, Government photographer, left this morning for Waikaremoana, whore ho will select sites for two pavilions on points of vantage to save tourists camping out, also the site of a jetty and boatshed at Waikareiti. From Waikaremoana he goes to Buatahuna, Galatea, Taupo, and Rotorua, and returns to Wellington via Taranaki. The verdict at tho inquest on the skeleton found at Morere was, “ The remains of a person unknown, no evidence to show the cause of death.” Among the bones was found a watch which corresponds with one Robert Clifford bought in Wairoa.

A verdict of suicide during temporary insanity was returned in the case of Arthur Marriner, ledgor-keepor in the Dargaville branch of tho National Bank, who shot himself through tho head with the bank’s revolveron Tuesday night. James Palmer was killed in a bushfelling accident at Aranga on Tuesday. The gunboat Torch, which arrived from Tonga this morning, surveyed a portion of Suwarrow Island, and proclaimed it a British naval coaling station. The island is the only one on tho Panama-Australia route with a deep-water entrance through the reef.
