Tho Council mot at 2.30 p.m. The Stato Coal Mines Act Amendment Bill and Mining Act Amendment Bill wero read a second time pro forma. The Second Hand Dealers Bill passed through Committeo. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Tho House met at 2.30 p.m. Mr James Allon askod Sir Joseph Ward if ho knew anything of the accusations mado in tho New Zealand Times regarding rioting by Now Zealand troops at Newcastle, Natal, being the statement mado to the Waimato Witness by two officers of the Tenth Contingent. Sir Joseph .Ward said the statement was absolutely untrue in every detail, and the officer who was in charge of the men had called on tho newspaper to officially contradict the statement. It did seem a pity that tho other rumor published regarding Australian troops should have been sent out without confirmation.
Mr James Allen urged that the names of those who mado the statements should be published. Sir Joseph Ward said that it was merely a newspaper statement, but ho would have onquirios made. The Land Act Amendment Bill was introduced by Governor's messago, and read a firet time. In reply to a question Mr Hall-Jones said that tho Public Works Amendment Bill would bo brought down next week. Tho House rosumed at 7.30 p.m. Tho Land Titles Protection Bill and Savings Bank Profits Act, 1878, Amendment Bill wero road a second timo pro forma, tho former beiDg referred to a Select Committeo.
Mr Hall-Jones moved the second reading of tho Inspection of Machinery Bill, which he explained was for a consolidation of the existing laws. It was agreed to on tho voices.
In Committeo on the Birds Nuisance Bill a now clauso was added, providing that all expenses incurred by any local authority in carrying out an Act shall bo paid out of its general funds, or, in case of Ministers, out of moneys to bo appropriated by Parliament for tho purpose. Midnight. Tho Sharebrokers Bill passed through Committeo with several amendments. The Destitute Persons Act Amendment Bill was under consideration in Committee when the Tolegraph Offiee closed.
