Tho Collector of Customs has roceived an official intimation from Suva that a third order white star diaptric light has now been placed on the south point of Wahava Reef. A cablegram was received this morning from Mr Brigham, secretary of the Harbor Board, that the negotiations for the equipment of Calliopo Dock have been completed, and that he is returning. Napier, last night. Obituary : Mr A. J. Cotterill, Crown Prosecutor, aged 54. Deceased, who was a son of the late Canon Cotterill, of Christchurch, was educated at Christ’s College, and studied law under Ilanmer and Harper, of Christchurch. He was admitted to the bar in 1873 by Justice Gresson, and was appointed Crown Prosecutor here in 1877. Pneumonia was the cause of death. New Plymouth, last night. A branch of the Union Bank of Australia opened hero to-day under the management of Mr G. E. Mannering. A few days ago the lighthouse keeper at Cape Egmont picked up on the beach two lifebelts tied together, as though they had been tied round some person. There was no name or mark of identification on either. Dunedin, last night, The body of a widow named Sarah Ann Pemberton, aged 69, was found floating in the Otago Harbor this morning. She had been suffering for some time, and took some painkiller last evening before going to bed. She was missing this morning. A search was made, and she was found about half a mile from her residence. An inquest will he held.

Christchurch, last night. A building in Cashel street occupied by C. Duggan, importer of painters’ material, and J. Logie, bootmaker, was completely destroyed by fire early this morning. The origin is unknown. The insurances are not obtainable.

Competition for the Golf Medal Handicap started this morning, there being 49 competitors. Up to 1 o’clock a number of competitors had not returned cards. Selby Palmer (Christchurch), a novice, with a handicap of IS, scored 70 net, and it is unlikely that this will be beaten. A cold, strong easterly wind is blowing, which embarrassed a good many competitors. Owing to the large number of entries the last pair did not leave the tee until 12 o’clock. To-morrow, in addition to the semi-finals of the championship, there will ho an open handicap in the morning, and bogey single in the afternoon.

The insurances on the property destroyed by fire in Cashel street are Duggan’s stock and fixings in the National J 21150, Norwich 12100, Sun £250 ; Logie’s stock 12700, office unknown. The buildings were insured for £650 in the National.

Invercargill, last night. In the Divorce Court a decree nisi was granted in the case of Alexander Piper v. Piper and Cook. It was stated that respondent and co-respondent were last seen iu Coolgardie.
