Nance O'Neill produced “ Magda ” at the Adelphi Theatre with fair success. The Scotia, the vessel of the Scotch Antarctic expedition, intends to operate southward from Weddel Sea. Captain Cootes has contributed LSOOO towards the expedition. New York, Sept. 2. Americans are indignant over the action of Admiral Higginson, commanding the American North Atlantic squadron, for entering Newport during the progress of naval manoeuvres in order to receive the Duchess of Marlborough, the Vanderbilts and Astors. The captains of the fleet protested, and refused to attend the reception given by the Admiral. Athens, Sept. 2. Rain and hail have greatly damaged the Greek currant crop. It is unofficially estimated at being one-third ruined. Morocco, Sept. 2. Berber tribesmen attacked the town of Mequinez, and raided the cattle markets. The Governor pacified them. It is rumored the attack was in connection with a revolutionary movement in favor of the Sultan’s brother. Romo, Sept. 2. Practically all the workmen in Florence, excepting the metal workers, have resumed work, and the town has resumed its ordinary aspect. Brisbane, Sept. 3. The shipwrights, boilermakers, and engineers at the Government dock were asked to accept a 10 per cent, reduction, but declined, and work has been stopped. Hobart, Sept. 3. The Assembly decided to reopen the debate on a clear cut issue, income tax or not. A keen debate resulted, ending in the Government’s taxing proposals being carried by a majority ol one. Two Ministerialists were absent. The Council negatived the vital clause of the Assessment Bill. The Chief Secretary thereupon adjourned the House to consider the question of the withdrawal of the Bill. Melbourne, Sept. 3. In the Federal House, Mr Deakin announced that the Commonwealth was willing to undertake the control of Norfolk Island. A prospector unearthed a nugget weighing a pound and a-half at Avoca. The Federal Minister of Customs stated that he hoped to make inter-State freetrade an actual fact before many weeks
