TELEPHONIC COMMUNICATION,

The East Capo lighthouse has at last been connected by telephone with Gisborne, communication of tho land lino from Kahukura having been completed yesterday. The establishment of. telephonic communication to tho island should prove a great boon to residents of tho East Coast, and should enable them to get all information with regard to tho steamers and schooners trading to coastal ports. Tho lighthouse should become ono o£ the most important signalling stations in tho colony, and the Government are making arrangements to report all vessels passing thero. It is probablo that the East Island station will be made a bureau office. Tho line wa3 tried yesterday, and conversation could easily bo carried on with Gisborne. PERSONAL.

Mr Matthews, thief ' Government Forester, accompanied by Mrs Matthews and Mr Symons, have bpen visiting,the Waipiro Hot Springs. They left yesterday for Tolago Bay, and will arrive in Gisborne by coach to morrow. Mr Matthews expresses himself highly delighted with the Springs, and will return in a short time to lay out the work which the State Department has in view. Mr Potaka, of Messrs Nolan and Skcet s office, has passed tho first grado of the Native Interpreter’s examination. Mr J. Stewart, telegraph lineman, has completed the construction of tho second line to l'okomaru, and he will return to town at the end of the week. He is to bo complimented on tho excellent manner in which the’lino has been put through. AN ARREST. A Native lad named Rawiri Grant was arrested at Tupavoa yesterday on a charge of theft. He is to bo taken to Awanui to-day, where tho enso will bo heard by Messrs Jackson and Ludbrook, J.’sP. Accused was arrested by Constable Abipeuc. SUPREME COURT. The half-yearly sittings of tho Supremo Court will bo opened at Gisborne ou Thursday next, 11th inst. Tho threo prisoners who were committed for trial in , connection with the robbery of a store at Port Awanui were brought from Napier by the steamer yesterday morning. The session of the Court is likely to bo a short one.
