CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Mr W. Wood, President of tho Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, at tho annual meeting this ufternoon urged the necessity for a direct lino to South Africa, but said that steamers should not call at Australia, which was New Zealand’s rival. He suggested that an arrangement bo mado with tho Ocean Steamship Company to take cargo for South Africa. In regard to the frozen meat trade he said that it was in a satisfactory position, but might be improved by tho appointment of. an Association or individuals to look after its interests in London. He also urged tho completion of tho Midland railway. Tho Chamber passed a motion urging on the Government the importance of early arrangements being mado for a steam service to South Africa, and suggesting that tho New Zealand Shipping Company, Shaw, Savill and Albion, Union Company, and Tysor lines be given an opportunity to tender for tho service.
