?? Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Albany, Aug. 20. Tho Union Company's steamer Aparima, bound from Calcutta to Dunediu, has arrived here with her cargo on tire.
FURTHER PARTICULARS. STEAMER HAD TO PUT BACK TO ALBANY. FLAMES MOUNTED OA'ER THE BRIDGE. CARGO MUCH DAMAGED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Received Aug. 21, 1.45 a.in. Albany, Aug. 20. Tho fire was first noticed smouldering in tho Aparima’s forward bunkers, on Sunday, but it was not till eleven yesterday morning, when 70 miles past Albany, that the situation became so serious that it was decided to put back. Soon after it was apparent that tho firo extended to number two hold. Tho latter bold was uncovered. Tho flames mounted over the bridge. By concentrating the efforts of tho crew in one hold all night the fire was got sufficently under to allow the hatches to be closed. Since arrival water has been pumped into the bunkers. Should the appliances aboard prove ineffectual a dredge will be employed to Hood the bunkers, in which it is estimated there are 100 tons uf coal, Smoke is still issuing from numbers one and two holds, and the bunkers and decks are sprung, and the fittings damaged. The Apirama has a cargo of 8000 tons of tea and rice. It is believed thoro are 2000 tons in number two hold badly damaged, and a quantity in number ouc considerably damaged,
(Per Prpss Association). Dunedin, last night. Tho Union Company, in reply to a cablo for particulars, has received information that the Aparima put in at Albany. The fire started in the bunkers, but extended to the cargo, which was considerably damaged. It was expected tho firo would bo subdued to day.
