The motion for referring the resolution of the Council with respect to the unsatistory condition of hotels in Wellington was agreed to.

The House met at 2.30.

The Solicitors’ Bill of Costs Bill (Mr Pirani) was read the second time pro forma. The Cycle Boards Bill, introduced by Mr Fowlda, was thrown out by 23 to 21. The Mining Act Amendment Bill, introduced by Mr McGowan, and Stud Bill, introduced by Mr Duncan, were read a second time pro forma. The House adjourned at 5.30. Wellington, midnight. The House resumed at 7.30. The Bank Holidays Bill was read a second time. In the courseofthe debate on the Bill Sir Joseph Ward expressed the opinion that there should be one universal weekly half-holiday, which could be observed by all classes of business. Sir Joseph Ward moved the second reading of the Cook and other Islands Government Act Amendment Bill.

A long debate ensued, in which the annexation of the group by New Zealand was exhaustively reviewed.
