London, Aug. 7. Showers fell during the morning, delaying the start until after lunch. The wicket was very dead and treacherous. The attendance was fair. Kelly, Jones, and Howell were omitted from tho Australians. The Home team was tho 6rst to bat. Hill opened vigorously, and knocked up 15, including two fours, before he was bowled by Saunders. Ilis partner in the meantime had not scored. One wicket for 15. Hopkins disposed of Webb with a catch at long-on. Two for 37. Poore and Sprott mado a useful Rtand, Noble ending the partnership by splendidlycatching Poore low down with his left hand off his own bowling. Threo for 66. Llewellyn contributed a couple and gave Hopkins an easy catch at mid on. Four for GB. Barton, on facing Noble, ■ was bowled first ball. Five for 70. Carter Dagged Johnston with a nice catch behind the wickets. Six for 78. Sprott, who went in third man, making moat of his much-interrupted opportunities, had gradually increased the score by 25. Hill added to his laurels by bowling Trumble for a couple (eight for 295) and Carter for a duck without addition to the score. Saunders assisted Noble to pass the century. Forcing the pace he brought up 113 opposite his name in 145 minutes before Robson stumped him. Australia’s innings occupied 190 minutes.
