PARLIAMENTARY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Council met at 2.30. The Hon Rigg moved the second reading of the Tied Houses Mil!. The Hon. Mr Louisson moved that it be read a second time that day six months hence.
The debate was adjourned. The Destitute Persons Act Amendment Bill was read a second time. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30. Sir Joseph Ward stated that the Commission of Inquiry into the Britannic troubles would consist of Sir William Russell, Mr McNab, and Mr Millar. In moving the third reading of the Loan Bill, Sir J. G. Wayd announced that the revenue for the first four months of this financial year was L6o,ooogreater than the revenue for the corresponding period of the last financial year. He also found that the railway revenue for July was LSOOO greater than for the J same month last year. The buoyancy he had indicated ought to allay any anxiety on the part of some members who appeared to fear the ability of the country to pay interest on the loan now proposed.
The debate on the Loan Bill had not concluded at the 5 30 adjournment. The House resumed at 7.30, when the debate on the third reading of the Loan Bill was continued by Sir Wm. Russell, who deplored the increased borrowing. He was followed by Mr Hogg, who supported the Bill, and Mr Massey, who gave it a qualified support. Messrs Smith, Witheford, Fisher, and Barclay followed in support.
The debate was interrupted by the supper adjournment.
