RESCUE WORK IMPEDED. 1 By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, July 31. 4 hero were close on two hundred and fifty men in the mine at the time of the disaster. Mr Bates, Government Inspector for the district, was making his periodical inspection, in company with the underground manager, when the explosion occurred. Mr Bates was got out. He was insensible and knocked about. But Mr Nelson was killed. One hundred and twenty men have effected their escape. The rest are still in the mine. A relief party has cleared the tunnel of debris. The ramifications of the mine extend some five miles into the hill. The explosion evidently occurred in the firEt section. It is possible that the men in the back workings may be safe. The after damp at the entrance to the mine is impeding the rescue work. bodies recovered.
