SPORTING.
TRAINING NOTES. f (By Early Bird.) ? Yesterday morning tho Park Company’s f pretty grounds presented the appearance of a race meeting, and townspeople who 1 took tho troublo to stroll out to the course woro rewarded by seeing quite a number of gallops. Work commenced with a strong gallop with Tauhei and Medallius over tho mile and a half course, but ' Medallius unfortunately broke down, and is not likely to be a starter to-morrow. Hylas and Morpoth were sent over the Steeplechase course, and both went well, jumping splendidly. Morpeth made a good impression, and should run well forward during tho meeting. Another splendid gallop was done by The Gryphon, The 1 Pullack, and Straybird, tho trio putting in a good 21- miles at top speed over tho steeplechase course. All jumped well, and there was little to choose betwoon them, all three finishing in a bunch. Buchanan was up on Straybird, and made tho pace very lively from tho jump. It is one of the first flutters that he has had over the sticks, and ho seemed to never want to pull up, one of his friends being compelled to remind him that the horse was not a machine, and could not go on for ever. Buchanan is eager to ride Stray- ! bird in tho cross-country evonts, and he may yet do so. The Pullack took kindly to the course, and finished in good style. The Gryphon finished up well, and found many admirers. Majestic and Kotiti did a good two miles over the sticks, noth jumping faultlessly, and finishing strong. G. 8.0. and Boughleen startod before the water jump, but Boughleen quickly came to griof, Malone receiving rather a bad fall. The course was afterwards cleared, and Malone’s team, Bruiser and Falstone, did a strong gallop for half a mile or so. Ping-Pong and Bullfinch came next, but the former easily ran away from Bullfinch. Ping-Pong finished up his task like a thorough tradesman, and | made many friends. Magpie put in a | mile in good style, jumping well. Shoela- ' wee was sent over tho mile course, the gallop being a most satisfactory one in 1 every respect. Hippowai and Wilson did sound work, as also did Ikatere, Soultina, Sergeant-Major, and Mangamahaki. A rattling good gallop was done by Paria and Papatu over tho mile and a-quarter course, good time being recorded, Paria having slightly the best of the run. Lady Raven t and Argyll also did good work, and the former should make it merry for her opponents in the milo and a-quarter raoo tomorrow.
