A CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER, By telegraph—Press Association— At Otaki to-day Harriet Drake was committed for trial on a charge of the manslaughter of Dorothy Gwendoline Drake, her daughter, aged years, whom it was alleged succumbed to the effects of whipping, administered by accused. Bail was allowed in one surety of £4OO, and two of £2OO each. A CENTENNARIAN. Mrs Christie, of Karori, who arrived in Wellington in 1851, celebrated her hum dredth birthday to-day. The old lady was born near Aberdeen. She is wonderfully hale and able to read and converse with ber friends without difficulty.
A LICENSE REFUSED. The Licensing Committee to-day refused to grant a new license to the Rainbow Hotel, Kqiwarra. The previous license was withdrawn for non-compliance with the conditions as to the accommodation imposed by the Committee. THE PRICE OF SHEEP. A cable message from Sydney gave the price brought- by sheep sold on account of Air Scales. This gentleman states that although the price was high, the charges were so heavy that the margin of profit was small. He says that it would have paid better to have frozen the sheep for the Home market. The freight and duty amounted to 9s. THE DEFENCE STEAMER.
