STEAMER ROTO MAHAN A TO THE RESCUE.

Tho Rotomahaua, wdth the Ellen Ballancc in tow, reached Lyttelton at 8.15 p.m. She sighted the launch about 2.30 a.in. about twelve miles off Kaikoura. A strong south-west galo was blowing, with a heavy sea, and the launch was in serious difficulties and making signals of distress. The Rotomahaua stood by, and succeeded in getting a rope to the launch at 4.30. She then towed her to Kaikoura, which was reached at 10.15. Hero a wirehawser was substituted for tho rope, and tho tow was continued to Lyttelton. The launch had lost her compass. The Nile was seen some miles further out when the Ellen Ballance was picked up, and seemed all right. - She put into Kaikoura at 4 p.m. The Rotomahaua left on her interrupted journey about 10 o’clock.
