CORONATION MEMORIAL.
(To the Editor of the Times)
Sir.—Do not let us have discord is the prayer of the Pointers, and they promise that they will not create discord —if they are allowed to have all their own way. lam not a West Ender, but I have sympathy witli those who object to the way in which the Point site was forced through, and I also agree with those who hold that Gisborne is not centred at a little corner at the back of a few buildings. It is time a little more life was - infused* into municipal matters. The question of the band rotunda is a small matter compared with the principles involved. An extra rate wias put upon us for the purpose of cleaning up the refuse that the people at the lower end of tiic town should themselves have done- at their own expense. The Victoria Domain, which was granted to the people after much agitation, has now been shut off from them for the benefit of the few. These and other matters are not likely to pass unnoticed,‘when the site for the rotunda is taken in conjunction therewith. How comes it that Mr Lysnar, who until lately lost no opportunity of upbraiding the Beautifying Association is now chief enthusiast ffcr the P'oint ? It is intended, we are told, not to spend more than £250 on a rotunda£loo would be quite sufficient, hut the intention apparently is simply for the improvement of the Point with the other £2OO ol' so. That might be submitted to as a permanent improvement or . the town, but file way the 111 ng is being done is sufficient to make thinking people object most strongly.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER,

Sir,—l learn that it is intended that another meeting should be called to express indignation at the way a few have got the Point site put through. What is the use of a public meeting if the voting is not confined to- those on the voters’ roll ? With others I. attended the recent meeting, intending to do all I could to help the bands to get their rotunda, which they deserve, but to put a vote in against the Point movement. What did I see ? Those who voted were many of them not on the roll, while who 1 went for a set purpose were deprived of right to vote on the question of site.—l am, etc. BOROUGH RESIDENT s '
(To the Editor of the Times),
Sir,—Re the Coronation celebration; on inspecting both s tes, the Point and tiie Recreation ground, I believe that the expenditure of the £4OO on the Recreation ground, by the Beautifying Association, would be far more, benefic al to the whole community than the enormous - expenditure required for the Point. I am' told that fifteen years ago the Recreation ground was not thought too far away for the holding of public gatherings. If the members of the Beauntfying vis ted the Recreation ground I think that the site would soon be decided as far as they are concerned.—l am etc., RECENT ARRIVAL',
'(To the Editor of the Times),
Sir, —There are several matters emanating from Thursday night’s discussions in the Council on the memorial question which require to be cleared up. I think if Councillors give no more consideration to important matters than they seem to have given to tho question of the supposed money available for a band rotunda before discus ;ing it in Council, and actually voting the funds for the purpose, it is no wonder the Council have to reconsider this deliberations. In the memorial discussion there wero several entirely erroneous statements made by some of the Councillors. Some of them stated that £IOO bad been actually promised to the band for a rotunda. This is not so. A start to canvass was made, and the total of £lB was promised, when the canvass was stopped in the hope that tho memorial donations would be made available for the purpose. In reply to Cr Harding, Cr Miller stated that he had put up his money. I would like to say that Cr Miller’s name is not on the band list, so there may be another list which I have no knowledge of. I can also bear out Cr Bright’s statement that ho and the other opponents to the Old Men’s Home as a memorial, bad nothing whatever to do with calling the public meeting. That was done without consulting any of the Councillors. They have certainly got astray when they think it possible to get a subsidy on a subsidy from the Government, and that hope can very well be put on one sido for ever. —I am, etc., Thos. Morrisox.
