CORONATION DAY.

SHOULD THE HOTELS BE CLOSED

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Dunedin, last night. The deputation which waited on the Mayor in the morning re the closing of the hotels on Coronation Day, interviewed the chairman and members of the Licenssing Committee in the afternoon. The Chairman (Mr C. C. Graham) said that the movement had their sympathy, but the committee held a strictly judicial position. He should not like it to go forth that the committee had made any special recommendation as directed to a general body. They could only say it would give them great pleasure if the Licensed Victuallers complied with the request of the citizens. Afterwards the oommittea decided to write to the President of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, saying that they understood the Mayor was gWJIg to ask the Licensed Victuallers to agree amongst themselves to close the bars on Coronation Day, and that while the committeee refrained from making any recommendation or request, they would be very glad to hear that the hotelkeepers could fall in with the request made. p3iil.2i

The matter of the hotels in Gisborne keeping open on Coronation Day has also been brought under the attention of the various local temperance societies, with the result that the Rechabites, at their meeting last evening, decided to telegraph to the Colonial Secretary on the matter as follows : —“ Rechabite Tent unanimously urge Minister close hotels Coronation Day.” A somewhat similar telegram was sent to the Minister by the Waiapu Prohibition League at their meeting the other evening. >
