LATE NEW ZEALAND.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Tho Rev. A. North, of Caloutta, has accepted a call to become Minister of tho Ponsonby Baptist Church. Wellington, last night. At a meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union this evening it was resolved that in future all elections be held on the Haro system. It was also resolved that the Management Committee in future be elected from the delegates only. A fifth class cup competition is to be started for the encouragement of schoolboys in football and to counteract the progress of the Association game through lack of Rugby facilities for such lads. A motion to give the Management Committee power to instruct its delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union how to vote was lost by 18 votes to 8. It was proposed that the Management Committee be instructed to reinstate the Hawke’s Bay match on its representative fixtures. The motion lapsed for lack of a seconder. It was announced at to-night’s meeting of the Victoria College Council that the Hon. G. Pharazyn had presented £IOOO towards the funds of the College. The donation was received with thanks, and the wish was expressed that other opulent citizens would follow the example. Napier, last night.
The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Minister for Publio Works, arrived by train this evenlug, and spoke at Mr A. L. D. Fraser’s, M.H.R., political meeting to-night. Tho Minister’s address wa= on general topic; He receives several deputations to-morro’ , from representatives of various publu bodies with regard to local works. Hokitika, last night.
The Westland Land Board, at to-daj’s meeting, affirmed the principle of haviig power to grant grazing licensos, under tie 218th section of the Land Act, on-areas already occupied under the Mining Art, the Board holding that the latter does not interfere with surface rights. An application was granted over the whole available flax land between Greymouth and Hokitika, a distance of 24 miles between railway line and sea, excluding 800 acres granted to another party, A number if other large areas for flax-cutting purpose! were either granted or adjourned.
In the Warden’s Court at Kumara today the application of Kane and party, purchasers of the Tekemakau River Golddredging Co.’s claim and plant, for another special claim, was heard. Their area is now in the river bed, but was formerly terra firma and held in fee simple,.' The application was dismissed, notice of appeal being given.
