Nuhaka Notes.
THE SETTLERS’ ASSOCIATION, A meeting of the Nuhaka Settlers’ Association was held in the Morere school-room on Saturday last. There was a good attendance. Mr M. J. Joblin presided. Correspondence was read from the Hon. James Carroll re steps to be taken towards forming a Waikokopu Harbor Board 1 ; also from Captain Davidson, relating to the service between Napier and Waikokopu . Trooper Whitehead also wrote thanking the As* sociation for the present that had been made to him as a slight token of esteem on his return from South Afr ca. A communication was received from Mr Sloan, urging the meel'ing'to form a branch of the Farmers' Union. After considerable discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Proudfoot, seconded by Mr Shaw, that the Association merge into a branch of the Farmers’ Union, and that Messrs Stewart,Black, Sloan, McKain, and Proudfoot be appointed a committee to canvass the district for the purpose of procuring tiie necessary number of members. Re the steamer service to Waikokopu there was a great deal of dissatisfaction expressed as to the landing of goods at the harbor, • the unnecessary delay in shipping the wool, and ‘the irregularity of the boat. , Many of the members were in favor of engaging Captain Davidson for the coming season, the Tangaroa being a far superior boat for passengers. Finally, it was decided to ' support Messrs Richardson and Co. for another ryear, as he had been to the expense of building a shed at Waikokopu for produce. etc. Mr Jefferson was 1 appointed to take charge of goods, and arrangements also made for h m to cart wool from his shed to the bay. A committee was formed, comprising Messrs Stewart, Walker, and Joblin to take the necessary steps to have the Waikokopu Harbor Bill passed at the next session. It was unanimously agreed to support the Wairoa County' Council’s proposal to raise a loan for the purpose of metalling the roads in the district. Mr G. Walker was requested to again represent the district on the Council. The Secretary was requested to write to the Minister of Lands, and urge upon him the absolute necessity of having a bridge built at Stewart’s Crossing, oh a road formed through'Walker’s paddocks. The meeting then adjourned for a month,
