A UNION STEAMER WRECKED.
MAWHERA ON A REEF^

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. News by the Tavinui states that the Union Company’s steamer Mawhera has been totally wrecked on Apataki Island in Pauomatus.
The details to hand are very meagre.; The steamer ran on the reef. The mishap occurred late at night. All hands were saved. The news was brought to Papeete by the trading schooner on May 31. A French warship was despatched to the - scene of the wreck—which is 300 miles from Papeete—on June 3rd. The Union Company has been advised that! the stetuneti was lost on the island of Fakavara, one of the Tuamotu group. Captain J. Dawson was in command of the Mawhera. He was for some time first officer of the Mararoa, from whioh position he was promoted to tho Mawhera. The Mawhera was for a time engaged in the East Coast trade, having taken up the Kiaora’s running a little over two years ago, prior to the Omapere coming on. Formerly the Mawhera was running in the Wellington-Greymouth trade, and was a very popular steamer. She replaced the Southern Cross in the Island trade.
The Mawhera is an iron steamer, 559 gross tonnage, and 345 net tonnage, height 174 ft, breadth 25ft 6in, depth 14ft 7in. She was built at Paisley, to the order of the Union S.S. Company, in 1883.
