THE RIGHT THING.

(To the Editor of the Times);

Sir, —Now that the public are giving an expression of opinion on the Coronation memorial, I might be allowed to make a few remarks. Messrs Harding, Jones, Whinray, Mason, Hepburn, and tho Mayor should be thanked by all rightthinking people in Poverty Bay for the stand they have taken re the lung’s memorial, and I only trust that they will stand to their guns, as all sound public men should do in a matter of this sort.

I think that an old men’s home is the right thing. The Beautifying Association might Bing dumb in this matter, as they get more money from the Borough Council than the ratepayers know about. Look at the Borough balance-sheet and see if you can find one shilling there. You cannot do so, but they have had a good sum all the same. Only a few days ago seven ratepayers asked for a footpath to be made to their doors, but could not get it. This is a nice state of things.

However, would any one of the progressive Councillors throw some light on this, and tell the public the amount the Beautifying Association has had of the ratepayers’ money ? The band rotunda might be built by public subscription. The bandmaster has a list with over £IOO for a start. Some think the old men’s home can be built out of the rates. This is not so, as the Borough Council are in the same fix as the County Council—not holding it. The King himself has notified corporations that he would prefer hospitals and homes seen to. Well, any man might help pain and suffering before music.—l am, etc, Ezme,
