TOLAGO BAY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The quarterly sitting of tho Magistrate’s Court will be hold to-day. The list is a comparatively light one, and the business should be quickly disposed of. So far, Tolago Bay has not expressed its intention of joining in the general festivities on Coronation Day, but as therp is a fortnight's interval something may be done. A few of tho leading sports will perhaps take this hint, and get to work, so that the crowning of King Edward VII. may bo a red-letter day in the history of the district.
Tlie Waiapu County Council, having finished the Hikuwai bridges, arc now devoting their attention to the intervening portion of the road. Contracts have been let for small road works, and culverts are being constructed where necessary. The Natives on the Hauiti side of the river are approaching the Education Department with a view of establishing a school there. Tho reasons set forth by the petitioners are that tho present school is already severely taxed to accommodate the children, and further that it is too far away for the children living on tho Hauiti side. From inquiries made, I learn that there are a number of children of school ago who aro not attending the Tolago School, the reason given by the parents being that they do not Jiko them across the river, on account of the inconvenience and danger of the ferry. Mr Kirk will probably furnish a report to the Department as to tho necessity of a second school in tho district after his present visit.
From a private sourco, I hoar that there is a strong probability of freezing works being started on the Coast next year, an offer having been submitted to several of tho leading station-holders. The site suggested is just beyond Waipiro, which locality is thoroughly suitable, thoro being good roads leading into it all round, whilst largo steamers can anchor in safety in the vicinity.
