A PERMANENT MEMORIAL.

(To the Editor ol the Times.)

Sir, —In reading your report of the Borough Council proceedings, I noticed .that no loss than three suggestions were made for the expenditure of the Coronation funds, viz., a band rotunda, an isolation ward, and an Old Men’s Home. Now, 1 have a fourth suggestion, and that is that the money should be devoted to buying a score or more decent street lamps for the town and suburbs. Seeing that the Borough is giving £2OO, they might take half the Government subsidy and erect £BOO worth of good Coronation lamps, which would be a great boon to residents whose business compels them to be out late at night. The County Council is contributing £SO, so let us bo generous and give them £SO of the £2OO subsidy. Lamps to the value of £IOO would be the greatest blessing that has ever been bestowed upon the suburbs. Last, but not least, there is the Harbor Board’s £SO. The amount can be subsidised by £SO, and a line of Coronation lamps can adorn the new and old wharf, and strangers to Gisborne will no longer be able to cast reflections upon us in that direction. It

certain members of the Council think we should have stained glass lamps with figures emblematic of the Coronation, all well and good, although, for myself, I should prefer a good practical lamp that would shed its kindly rays from one corner to another.—l am, etc., Incandescent.
