AMALGAMATION PROPOSALS.

DISCUSSION AT MEETING OF COUNCIL.

'At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, Cr Lysnar proposed, “ That the Government be asked to accede to the request of the Amalgamation Committee to set up a commission.” He narrated the steps that had been taken by the Amalgaamtion Committee, aiid urged that 'he Council should support the Committee in their efforts to get a commission setup. He pointed out that the County Council were about to raise a loan, and although both Whauitopoko an d Kaiti would have to pay ■their share towards it, neither place .would receive qny benefit. It was an absurd position for the suburbs to be in. On the other hand, if the suburbs did not agree to the loan the County would lie deprived of the right to borrow. There was also the question of the bridges, which that Co uncil was tnore directly interested in. The Mayor doubted if the Council had any standing n the matter, as it was not one the petitioning bodies. He thought that the Government would either give further reasons for the action taken, or else they would appoint a commission,, as as ked by the Amalgamation Committee. He did not think that the Council should proceed further in the matter. Cr Whinray was also of that opinion. Cr Jones thought that the Council would do well to keep clear of this question. He did not think that the resolutions sent to the Government hy the Committee would be of much avail. It was not the right wa.y to go about the matter in endeavoring to bounce the Government. After further discussion, the motion was carried hy five votes to four, the ayes being : Crs Lysnar, Bright, Mason, Hepburn, and Harding, Noes Crs Miller, Jones,, Whinray, and the Mayor, _____
