POLICE REPORTS. Tho police reports with regard to all the above houses were of a favorable character. Reference was made to the new houses erected in Gisborne, Murewai, and To Karaka, and tho Sergeant considered that there was now aiuplo accommodation. All the houses were well conducted. WAIPIRO HOT SPRINGS. David Gordon applied for a license for tho Te Puia Springs Hotel, Waipiro. Mr Jones appeared in support of the application. The Chairman pointed out that the Committee had no power to grant it. The result of the last poll was against it, and no license had dropped since. Mr Jones withdrew the application, stating it was put in year by year by Mr Gordon in tho hope that a vacancy would occur. No place required it so much as the To Puia Hot Springs. The application was put in year by year in the hope that somebody would be kind enough to drop out. The application from Mr McLean for an accommodation house at Nuhaka was stated by Mr Jones to be in the same position.

WAIPIRO HOTEL. In the police report mention was made by SorgeantjSiddells of tho hotel at Waipiro Bay which is still in the same condition as it was at last annual meeting, except that some slight alterations have been made for the hotter. Mr Pettie, the present owner and licensee, kept this house very well. He understood that there was 'still the difficulty about land whereon to build a new house. Tho Chairman stated he had been in hopes that new buildings would have been built, but the difficulty was to obtain tho necessary township seotions. He had been making inquiries at the Survey Office regarding the matter, and was told that it would be six months. “ They told me the same thing when I enquired last year,” remarked Mr Barton. It would be unfair to ask Mr Pettie to re-build under | the circumstances, and he certainly is I making the best of the premises. MARUMARD HOTEL. The Chairman said there was no doubt the Marumaru Hotel was very old and dilapidated, and it would be necessary in a short time to re-build it. He would be glad if one of tho members of the Committee would go over it with him. He hardly liked that one member should condemn tho premises. It was suggested “that Mr Hepburn was generally a visitor to Wairoa during February, and might undertake the duty. The matter was left for the Chairman to arrange. BRITISH EMPIRE HOTEL. I On the application of Mr Jones, an extension of time was granted to the Empire Hotel to complete outbuildings.

CONDITIONAL LICENSES. Conditional licenses were granted to John Hodgson Aislabie for June 12 and 25 at the Matawhero saleyards. ARGYLL HOTEL. An application for an extension of time for the orection of the Argyll Hotel was <n-antcd, Mr Lysuar appearing for the owners. Counsel stated that the difficulty in "etting labor and material had been "teat lately, and the other hotels had been fortunate in getting built so quickly. The Argyll building was progressing steadily, and in about a fortnight the hotel portion of it would bo completed. The Chairman said arrangements would have to be made in regard to fire-escapee. Sergeant Siddells thought the proprietors should bo given the effect of what was decided by the Committee before they started. It would prevent them having probably to pull anything a jjysnar said the proprietors would be glad to receive any information as to what was required. , The Chairman remarked that the building had' been inspected some time ago, and the proprietors had agreed to do what was necessary for escape in time of nre. If the Sergeant and himself made suggestions to the proprietors they would no doubt be carried out. .... . Mr Lysnar said it would be better to make the suggestions now than when the building was being completed. The Chairman did not think the balcony would be sufficient for fire-escape in its proposed position. Fire-escapes from the back portion of the building would have to be provided.
