LICENSING ACT.
FAILING TO COMPLY WITH ORDER OF COMMITTEE. The ordinary proceedings of the Waiapu Licensing Bench annual meeting yesterday were interrupted when the application for the renewal of tho license of the Morere Hot Springs Hotel was reached.' “ A notice has been served upon the licensee to show causo why the licenso should not be cancelled,” remarked the Chairman, 11 and tho Committee would like to hear something with regard to the matter.” “No doubt that refers to the stable,” replied Mr Nolan. Reference had been made by Mr Barton at an earlier stage of the proceedings to the stable at this hotel. Tho Bench had ordored that a stable should bo built. He, Mr Barton, upon the occasion of his last visit, had suggested that aborse-box should be placed at one end ; also a forage and harness room. Mr J. W. Nolan said he understood the matter was being attended to. % - Mr J. Sheridan, the lessee, said the Btable was just od the point of completion.
The Chairman mentioned that ho had seen Mr Sheridan that morning, and he was quite agreeable that what was suggested should be carried out. The order of the Bench in regard to the building had not been complied with, and on this account the above notico had been served upon the licensee. Mr Nolan :• The stable has been completed. • The Chairman : The licensee, finding that he was unable to complete the stable at the time stated, should have applied to the Committe for an extension of time. Mr Nolan : The licensee lives at a considerable distance from Gisborne. I un-. derstood that the matter was being attended to. Mr Barton : Have you nothing to show why the stables were not completed at the time ?
Mr Sheridan, the lesee, said that great difficulty had been experienced in getting the material to the hotel. At the last meeting the timber and iron were on the way, but the delay had been caused through the difficulty of getting them to the springs. The stable had been built in December, although it did not arrive till lately. He had made every effort to comply with the requirements of the Bench. The Chairman : The Bench should have been approached, and an extension of time asked for. Mr Sheridan : I thought that the building would be up ; the material was sent there last December, but it was delayed on th 6 road until April. We have made every effort to comply with the requitrments of the Bench. Mr Barton : If the weather caused delay then an extension of time should have been asked for. However, we shall not make an order of cancellation upon this occasion. It must be clearly understood, however, when the Bench make an order, and the jicensee does not comply with it in the time allowed, that he must apply for an extension of time. Mr Sheridan : I expected Mr Cooper would have been present to explain the matter. 1 regret that delay has occurred.
