FIRE AT DUNEDIN.
(Per Press Association). DUNEDIN, last night. A fire broke out early this evening in Hudson and Company’s new biscuit confectionery and chocolate works in Castle street. Fanned by a strong south-west breeze the flames spread rapidly, until the whole place was a mass of flames. The heat was intense, but by hard work and a good water supply, the Fire Brigade prevented the fire spreading to the flour mill and adjoining buildings. The building destroyed was three storeys high, built of brick, 120 feet by 70 feet,. and the firm had only moved into it about nine months. The first story was used as a manufactory, the second floor for chocolate and pangoods, and the top story for packing, storing etc. Everything was destroyed. The machinery, mostly new, was valued at about'£lo,ooo. There was only an insurance of £IOOO in the Royal Exchange. The value of the stock can, not be given yet. It is known to be several thousand pounds, and there was only a small insurance on, the amount not known. The buildings would be valued at about £IOOO. It is assumed, though nothing is known, that the fire must have started in ihc drying room by some fire finding its way into the flues by which the room is heated.
