HOCKEY.

The first match of what promises to be a very interesting series of hockey contests eventuated yesterday .afternoon •at .Victoria Domain in the presence of a small but distinctly appreciative body of spectators, the rival teams being City v. Kia Kaha. After a fast jnd very interesting game played in tnree spells of twenty minutes, Kia Kaha succeeded in wresting the coveted honor from City by three goals to two: It would be hardly fair to criticise the respective merits of the teams or individual players, seeing that this Vnatch practically inaugurates the game of hockey in this district, but as an old enthusiast in hockey tersely puts it, “ I have seen many w'orse games played by reputed clubs,”—a fact, which, if true, should be a great encouragement to all players interested. For City, A. Zachariah displayed striking form, whilst Garrett was the mainstay of the winners. Kia Kaha’s scores were made by Maude (2) and Evans (1), whilst C. Buscke (1) and Coleman (1) were the lucky strikers for City. On the play City would appear to be a stronger team individually than the Kia Kaha, but Jack the latter’s combination, which, although not first-class, was very fair for beginners, Mr Pavitt had control of the game, and having the implicit confidence of the players, showed that [ a referee can both control and help the game. Messrs Plimmer and Lewis acted as line umpires, and gave general satisfaction. The next match will he between Kia Kaha and West End next Tuesday at 3 p.m., and although a very good game should ensue, the latter should just about get home. Players would do well to roll up sharp in future, as it handicaps any team very much when it lias to play short-handed. The respective teams will be posted outside Mr W. Miller’s shop next Saturday evening.
