PERSONAL.
Mr Rose, Assistant-Secretary and Inspector of Post Offices, is at present visiting Gisborne. Mr A. B. Williams arrived from Napier yesterday, and left for Waipiro to-day. Mr H. Wallace, the well-known representative of Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co., of Auckland, arrived by ihe Elingamito yesterday afternoon. Pie leaves on a tour of the Coast to-day. Mr Vincent Barker, who was admitted to practise as a solicitor at the last sittings of the Supreme Court in Gisborne, made bis first appearance in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. We wish him success in his career.
The many friends of Mrs John Biddles, of Te Araroa, will regret to hear of that lady’s death, which took place ut tho residence of Mr L. T. Symes. Mrs Biddles was apparently in the best of health on Tuesday, when she walked into town with Mrs Symes. At night, she complained of not feeling well, and at 2 o’clock on Wednesday morning Dr Williams was sent for. 'it was found that she was suffering from the result of a very severe chill, and, despite all that medical skill could devise, her condition became critical, and shortly after 5 p.m. she passed away. The funeral will take place this afternoon, leaving her late residence, Whalaupolto, at two o’clock. Trooper Bushnell, of tho Sixth Contingent-, returned from South Africa yesterday. Trooper Humphries, of Gisborne, is at present in England. The friends of Trooper E. Kenny will be interested to hear”tbat ho has joined the Field Artillery in South Africa. Trooper D. Buckley is at present in Capetown, having been invalided home. Sergeant W. Gannon, of the Fourth Contingent, has joined the Railway Department- in South Africa, Trooper T. Ogden, of the Sixth Contingent, has joined the Canadian Scouts. Mr J. S. Wauchop, who has been appointed third assistant master at tho Gisborne District High School, arrives from tho South on Wednesday next. Tho Gisborne school is to be congratulated upon securing Mr Wauchop’s services, as he has recently held the position of Headmaster in tho Balcairn’School, Canterbury. Trooper Skeet, who left Gisborne with the Sixth Contingent, is at present in the Wairarapa district. Trooper Hurrey returns to Gisborne on Saturday next. Sergeant Raymond Porter has returned from South Africa, and is at present in Wellington. The friends of Corporal Denny, of the Seventh Contingent, will be sorry to hear that ho is in the Wellington Hospital, suffering from fever. Mrs Harrison Lee, who is now on her way from London to New Zealand, is to lecture at Gisborne on the subject of prohibition.
Miss Large has been engaged to sing at a grand concert to be held here on the 19th of June. Parents desirous of giving their boys and girls a rational and practical cduca-. tion would do well to study the prospectus of Mr T. Harle Giles’ Business and Training College, Lower Symonds street, Auckland.
