Captain Edwin wired at 12.35 p.m. yesterday : “ Glass rise ; moderate southerly winds; tides good ; frost tonight." A very high sea was running in the bay yesterday. There was snow on the lulls at a distance, hut the keen cold was tempered by sunshine. At sunset the wind calmed down.

A widely-signed petition is to he presented to the Harbor Board this afternoon, urging that- increased storage accommodation lie given at the wharf. Much 'inconvenience is now caused by the way goods have to be piled into the shed on a busy day. A point that should have the attention of the Harbor Board is the fact that wages are now only paid every month, instead of weekly or fortnightly. There is no reason why the Board’s Finance Committee should not pass wages cheques each fortnight on vouchers made up in the usual way by the Engineer. The President extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. The games played were cribbagc, euchre, whist, and chess, and resulted in -the Club scoring 23 points to 18 scored by the Fire Brigade. At the conclusion of play, Mr G. Wildish thanked the members of the Club for

the pleasant evening spent, and stated that they would he glad to play a return match in about a month’s time. The Hospital Trustees held theii' monthly meeting last- evening, wnen the following members were present : Messrs Nolan (in the chair), Tlaramg, Dewing. Joyce, Macfarlane, and Warren. The monthly report showed that there were 27 patients at present in i the Hospital. The Treasurer reported j that the overdraft amounted to. £320. The requisition on the Charitable Aid | Board, which had been referred back ; for the deletion of the amount .placed i in the estimates for an isolation'ward, ; was amended by the striking out of j £750, being the amount that had been j set, down for the isolation ward. This item was struck out in order to meet the convenience of the Board, which is at present short of funds. The Trustee?;..found it impossible .to reduce any of the other items. The East Coast Mounted Rifles are the fortunate recipients of a very handsome pair of field glasses, which were presented to them by Mr W. F. Acland Hood, to be shot for by members of the corps. It is to be doubted whether a more complete or better pair have ever been seen in the Bay, and the competition should excite great interest, the conditions of which were fixed at • a meeting of the Shooting Committee held last evening. The course set is very stiff, and covers every range from 200 to 880 yards and in all positions, so it behoves every member who has a desire to win the trophy to put in a lot of practice. The first ■ompetition will take place on Tuesday next, when the Mafeking Cup also comes up for competition. All entries close on the ground, and shooting commences at 0 a.m. -The Committee hope to have other prizes for tho.se who do not come out top. Sir W. F. Sinclair, of the Masonic Stables, wishes us to state that he will not be purchasing horses at the stables after 12 noon to-day, as he is leaving for the Coast to buy at Tolago Bay and Tokomaru. On Wednesday, June 4th, and until advertised 'he will again buy at the Masonic Stables, only sound horses in good condition. ' Since Thursday last he has secured about 40, but intends to make up a mob of about 100, which will be .sent through to Palmerston North, about the 10th of June, horses being scarce there on account of so many being shipped as remounts. Sinoe Mr Sinclair bought the Masonic Stables three months ago he has gradually replaced the old horses with fresh ones, and has renovated the plant generally. The yards have been paved and fitted ; with water troughs and hay racks ; good paddocks have been secured and patrons can rely on having their horses, buggies, and gear well looked after. During Mr Sinclair’s short ab- 1 sence Mr H. Ashton is in charge.
