AUCKLAND EDUCATION BOARD.
THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S GRIEVANCE.

This afternoon the Education Board considered the resignation of tho Auckland City Schools Committee, on the ground that the Committee were not consulted in the matter of oertain appointments. The Chairman (Mr Bagnall) said that it would be necessary to appoint a day for the second election. Since January, 1897, thero had been 28 appointments to the City Schools, in each of which tho School Committee were invited to select a teacher from the names submitted to them, and their recommendations had been adopted, In four instances, including the two present ones, the Board had not adopted their recommendations. Mr Bagnall also stated that the Board had the regulation of the staffing of 400 schools, and of the promotion of 800 teachers on a fair and impartial basis. There was no desire to censure or to act in any improper way towards the Committeo. They desired to meet the Committee in every way. After discussion, it was decided that a meeting of householders bo held on June 23 for the election of a committee. The Secretary for Education wrote that the Police Department- would not undertake the conduct of prosecutions under the School Attendance Act, though the police would continue to give all assistThe Chairman said that this would moan that many prosecutions whioh might | he taken would have to be abandoned.
