EMPIRE SKATING RINK.
A large crowd gathered at the Theatre Royal last evening cn the occasion of the opening of the Empire Skating Rink, and judging by the enthusiasm shown the management are assured a most successful season. An excellent band was in-- 1 *
attendance, and the evening passed all too quickly for skaters and spectators. Between 70 and 80 ladies and gentlemen took part in the skating, and tbe crowd of spectators were afforded a good evening’s fun in watching tbe operations of the former. The percentage of falls at the outset was perhaps greater than what one woull see in a really stiff engagement on tbe battlefield, but bye and bye tbe skaters got more confidence, and made a much better show. Those who appeared on wheels for the first time, however, came in for a fairly warm time, and some • very amusing spills occurred during the evening. On one occasion three young ladies came to grief all in a heap at the door, and the spectators were unkind enough to applaud most enthusiastically. , The pastime prom ses to become rnos popular in Gisborne during the winner .
