to-day. Trumble, Carter, and Saunders stood out of tho Australian team, and Cranfield, the Somerset bowler, and Llewellyn out of M.C.C. The weather was fino and warm, but dubious. The attendance was good. Grace won the toss, and sent Palairet and Fry to face the bowling of Jones and Noble. The batsmen commenced quickly, and soon warmed up. Runs came freely. After half a century, appeared, Darling tried a doublo change of bowling, Howell and Trumper replacing Noble and Jones. This had tho desired effect. With the score at 79, Fry retired leg-beforo to Howell. Ho was 53 minutes at the wickets. When at eight ho was badly missed by Trumper at mid-on. One wicket for 79. Ranji filled the vacancy, but immediately lost his partner, who was clean bowled by Trumper. Two wickots for 79. Braund joined Ranjitsinhji, and Jones and Noble aguin went on to bowl. Once more tho change came off, Jones clean bowling Braund. Three for 91. Warnor followed, scoring a couplo. Four for 97. Trott carno uext, and assisted to carry tho total to 110, being dismissed by a nice catch by Duff at iong-off from Noble. Five for 110.
At tho luncheon adjournment, the score stood at five wickets for 117, Ranjitsinhji having 25 to his credit. Ho was missed by Armstrong low down in the slips when 19. The batting of the homo team so far has been very good on a difficult wicket. On resuming, Ranjitsinhji and Grace made a determined stand, and raised the score to 168 without tho loss of a further wicket. Ranji made 6*l and Grace 12. Ranji made 60 out of 67 put together in 80 minutes. Ho hit five beautiful fourers off Jones. Armstrong took the ball at 180, and with threo runs added Ranji was j clean bowlod. Ranjitsinhji was nearly two hours at tho wicketß, and gave a fine display, his total including eleven fourers. Six wickots for 183. Storor succeeded. When Grace had made 29, he tried to pull Howell to leg, and was easily caught by Gregory at mid-on. He was batting nearly an hour and a half. (Tho record for the seventh wicket is not stated.) Storer retired without scoring, leg-before to Howoll. Eight for 189. The scores are:—

In one instance he should have boen caught and bowled by Jones, and in tho other, Kelly stepping back, missed him. Hearne played one on to tho wicket. Total .240 Bowling Analysis: Jones took two ' wickots for 62, Noble two for 96, Howell four for 54, Trumper one for 7, Armstrong * one for 8. Duff and Trumpor opened tho Australia’s innings, tho latter playing livoly. Duff got leg-boforo with his score at sixteen. The partnership lasted for thirty- , five minutes, and produced sixty-nine rnns. Hopkins filled the vacancy. When tho stumps wore drawn the weather was fine, and the wicket is quite good now. Australia, has lost one wicket for seventy-four runs. Scores are :
