A LEGAL QUIBBLE.
CHEATING THE CUSTOMS
By telegraph—Press AssociationCopyright.
MELBOURNE, May 27. Recently a firm was fined for alleged production of a false invoice with intent to defraud the Customs. Justice Hodges has quashed the conviction on the ground that the duty imposed on the Chamber o£ the Federal Parliament differs from the State duty, or where, as in this case, it is not State duty, the Federal duty is ultra vires.
