FARMERS’ UNION.
TRADE WITH SOUTH AFRICA.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Duuedin, last night. At a meeting of the Provincial Branch of the Farmers’ Union some discussion took place on the quts ... . -i ■ _'■* trade with South Africa. One memucr_ thought that if each member of the Union subscribed 10s, which would mean -£60,000. that with a Government subsidy would be strong inducement to open up such trade. It was resolved to urgently request the Government to take immediate steps to bring about direct trade, with South Africa, as the Union felt that there was danger of it being diverted. In connection with the contract for oats for the War Office, it was resolved to telegraph to the Acting-Premier : “ It has been reported to the Farmers’ Union that damaged oats are now being mixed with good oats for shipment to South Africa. Will you kindly wire instructions to the Government grader to exe; cise strict supervision. The Union do not object to tho shipment of discolored, so long as they are good and sound. A shipment of bad and musty oats will ruin future prospects.” It was decided to inform tho Minister of Lands that the Council could not see its way to recommend the Land and Live Stock Bill as drafted.
