THE CABLES.
VICTORY FOR SIR JOSEPH WARD.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The Eastern Extension Cable Company has approached the Government, putting forth certain proposals for a reduction of the rates between New Zealand and Europe. The only condition precedent to the reduction is that certain undertakings shall be given the Company by the Federal Government of Australia, the principal of which is that the proposed reduction shall not affect the agreement existing between the Company and the Commonwealth. If the undertaking is given, the reduction of rates from New Zealand will be : Ordinary messages, from os 2d to 3s 4d per word ; Government messages via Eastern 3s 9d to 2s 4d ; Government messages via Pacific, 3s 8d to 2s 3d ; press messages, 2s to Is 2d. The international rates from New Zealand will therefore be uniform with Australia, plus, of course, 3d per word for the cable rate between the colony and Australia, and Id for the New Zealand terminal rate. > : .
