THE SLIP.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —Re harbor matters ; in reading your leading article on Monday, 19th inst., I notico you referred to the erection of the 3lip that is now being constructed at the mouth of the Waikanae. You also referred to the last meeting of the Harbor Board ; that the structure was in accordance with those that had been a success elsewhere. Might I ask where, under the same local conditions, such a similar structure exists ? I have been many years in the colony, and have had considerable experience in shipping, and more especially slip work, and I guarantee no such similarly situated structure does exist. I know practically no sane shipbuilder would erect a slip on such a site: but for a small graving dock on a different aDgle to the present structure tho site would be most suitable. I further agree with “ Ratepayer ” that yonr article was not half strong enough, and that the ratepayers will wince over the cost of the said structure when they find out that another “bloomer” has been perpetrated at their expense ; for no master would trust his vessel getting on a slip placed in such a position.—l am, etc., Another Ratepayer,
