A ROUGH VOYAGE.

WATER-LOGGED BARQUE TOWED ' TO PORT.

By Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, last night. « The barque Gladys, 125 days out from , Liverpool to Wellington, was towed into 4 harbor to-lay by the steamer Poherua. The collier fell in with tho barque off Stevens’ Island at ten o’clock on Tuesday morning. The Gladys had lost her foretop and top-gallant masts, main top gallant most, and part of her jibbooin. She had over a foot of water in the hold. Most of her remaining sails were in ribbons, and she was refusing to answor her helm. In response to signals for assistance, Captain Adams took the Poherua alongside the barque, and passing a tow-line aboard, commenced to tug her to Wellington, the question of towage or salvage being left in aboyance. Captain Foote, of the Gladys, reports having had a most tempestuous passage. From the Tasmanian coast the wind - blew with hurricane force, and the sea was alarmingly high. The decks were continually flooded. Everything movable, including two boats, was carried away. At seven o’clock on Tuesday morning a tremendous sea broke aboard, completely gutting the deck-house and forecastle, washing the captain off tho poop on to the main deck, and severely injuring the second mate, Humphrey, who was at first thought to have been killed. The crew lost tho whole of their effects. They had a most anxious and trying time, particularly as great difficulty was experienced In clearing away the wreckage of the top-hamper when it came down. The question of salvage will probably como before the Court.
