Mr R. Groom has been re-appointed a member of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board.
Yesterday Mr John Warren completed twenty-two years of service as County Clerk. Though the CookCounty has had and is still having its hard times, it has been very fortunate in having as its Clerk such a careful, capable, and obliging officer as Mr John Warren, and to the Council our congratulations are offered.
Mr F. C. Clark, of the firm of Messrs Clark and Sons, Limited, arrived in Gisborne last evening, having ridden from Wairoa via Nuhaka. He proposes seeing the Coast before he leaves the district, and will be accompanied by Mr A. T. Hookey, the local manager for the firm. Mr H. H. Fairlie, of Tokomaru Bay is at present on a visit to Gisborne. Mr Smith, formerly telegraph operator at Gisborne, should know a little about seismic disturbances before the Government have done with him. He was doing relieving at work at Cheviot when that place got such a severe shaking. Now he has been transferred to Rotorua, where he will be able to see the many uncanny sights of a volcanic region.. Mr and Mrs R. Little, of Kaiti, intend leaving Gisborne early in June for a trip to the Old Country. The popular cricketer, Mr J. Hussey, of the Customs Department, is spending a week in Gisborne. He is being transferred from Napier to Dunedin. By the steamer Tardwera yesterday, six Gisborne members of the Sixth Contingent Sergeant-Major Pickett, Corporals DeLputour, Moore, and Fraser, and Troopers Law and Grayson, returned home. At Napier the Gisborne boys were warmly welcomed and taken to the Criterion Hotel, where they remained as guests of the Napier Committee until their departure. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Townley) and Major McCredie gave the men a hearty welcome home, and complimented them upon their e.vcellent work. Mr James Macfarlane has resigned the Chairmanship of the Cook County Council, as he intends leaving for New York at an early date. He will, how-

Trooper G. Carter, of Gisborne, who lias served with two contingents and done excellent service, is returning home with the Seventh Contingent.
Trooper Lapdell, of a member of the Sixth Contingent, who is weli-k'npw.j in this district, .was a through passenger by the Tarawera yesterday, en route for Rotorua, being at present on the sick list. Private letters from South Africa state that Private C. Challis, of the Tenth Contingent., was promoted to be sergeant on the departure of the troopship from Wellington. His many Gisborne friends will be pleased to hear of his promotion. Messrs D. and T. Carroll, late of' Waerenga-o-kuri, are at present in Capetown, and hold excellent positions.
