FIRE IN CHILDERS ROAD.
A fire broke out shortly after ten yesterday morning, Mr C. D. Bennett's twelveroomed house in Childers road being destroyed. Mrs and Miss Bennett were the only members of the family at home at the time; it was washing day, and while they were at the back of the main building, they noticed smoke. On running to see the cause they found that the dining-room was ablaze. The fire had a firm hold, and soon the whole building was a mass of flame, being totally destroyed. Very little was saved. Miss Bennett, at much risk t& herself, saved a good deal oi her weaving apparel and jewellery. The only other articles saved were a few chairs and tables. Mr and Mrs Bennett lost all their personal effects, including Mrs Bennett’s valuable jewellery. The household silver was destroyed, being found afterwards in a melted state among the ruins. . The Fire Brigade arrived with the manual engine, but too late to save the dwelling-house. The insurances were £550 on the house in.the Royal Exchange office, and £550 on the furniture in the Manchester office.
