A ROUGH PASSAGE.
EXPERIENCE OF THE TE ANAU (Spocial to Timks.) Auckland, last night. Tho To 'Anau, which arrived from Gisborne late last night; made tho very long passage of 38.-) hours. The Te Anau left Gisborne at 9.15 a.m. on Wednesday, and fell in with a strong westerly gale and heavy head seas, which moderated on nearing tho East Cape. After passing the Cape, however, the northerly gale blowing into the Bay of Plenty caused the seas there to bo very high, and tho Te Anau had a very rough time of it throughout the night. Tho squalls were very violent, and the barometer fell as low as 29.20. Yesterday the gale showed no signs of abatement, and throughout the same unfavorable conditions of weather were experienced. Frequent heavy rain and hail . squalls foil yesterday. On Wednesday night, although tho engines were driven at full speed, the steamer did not at the time make as much headway as one knot par hour. Coming up the Coast the To Anau stood well in towards the laud, so as to get smoother water, but even here tho seas wore exceptionally high, and until tho steamer reached port the bad weather was experienced. Cinquevalli was a passenger by the To , Anau. His entertainment had to be postponed last night owing to the late arrival of the boat.
