A good story of the Prince of Wa’.i s tha'-: was not told during the Royal tom relates to a particular time m his youth when he found himself badly, off tor some money. He tried ms father, and failed, and in his extremity determined to appeal to his grandmother. He did not get the money he wanted, hut he got from Queen Yictor.a a letter severely rebuking h'm for his extravagance, but reading 1 ini a long homily on the virtues of frugality and the necessity of curbing tastes that can only be gratified at a heavy expense! The Prince was properly penitent, evidently, as lie wrote no further, and when next he came face to face with his grandmother, she said : 11 1 hope my hoy, that you derived some benefit from the long letter 1 wrote you?” “Oh, ves,’ was the innocent reply, “ I sold it to an' autograph collector for ten nounds. That was just the sum I wanted.” A crusade for the abolition of the barmaid is the latest departure with which the Glasgow magistrates are credited. During the last few weeks extensive visits of inspection have been made to licensed premises by iho authorities, and although as yet no official pronouncement has been made, hints have been dropped here and there that the services of the young ladies behind the bars will have to bo dispensed with. Already the trade has taken alarm, particularly that section engaged in the restaurant business, which employs hundreds of young women. A meeting of tlje representatives of the leading restaurateurs was held to consider the situation. It was of an informal character, and proceedings were private. After a prolonged discussion it was decided to take legal advice as to the powers of the licensing authorities in the direction indicated.
May 15 has been fixed as the date for the conference of state Premiers in Sydney.
