(Per Press Association.) NAPiER, last night. The Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association are unable to raise the guarantee of £BSO for a visit of the English team, owing to the obligation in connection with Trotfc the coach.
WELLINGTON, last night. As Messrs. Mallard, Smith and Christopher, of Dunedin, have not within the time allowed resigned their commission of the Peace, the Government have decided to recommend the Governor to Gazette them out.
CHRISTCHURCH, last night. A four-rooined house on the Springfield road, owned by T. I-litcliens, and occupied by Edward Walker and wife, was completely gutted by fire last night. Mr and Mrs Walker were asleep at the time, and just escaped with their lives. Mr Walker being rendered unconscious. The insurance on the building was £75 in the South British the furniture being uninsured. ASHBURTON, last night. The Borougli Council last evening voted another £25 to tiie Beautifying .Association, whose good work is muon in evidence.
The carelessness of the health authorities in examining arrivals from infected ports was strongly commented on in the Council, instances being given. DUNEDIN, last night. A woman named Margaret Sickles, living with her husband at Green Island, was found dead in a bedroom last evening. The husband first saw her at half-past four in the afternoon lying across the bed, but did not disturb her, thinking her asleep, until about ten o’clock in the evening, when lie discovered she was dead. An inquest will be held.
THE THAMES SENSATION, (Per Press Association). THAMES, last night. It has been ascertained that slimes to the value ol' £7OO were stolen eighteeu months ago from the Waihi Company, and taken to various parts of the colony, as far south as Dunedin, in the endeavor of those having them in possession to have them treated. It is not believed that all the stolen slimes have been discovered. Eager came to Auckland from Sydney three years ago to work for the Rev, Joseph Campbell in connection with his hyperphoria process, and he is 27 years of age. Finn is 23.
SUPREME COURT,. (Per Press Association.) NAPIER, last night. The following cases were dealt with at the Supreme Court this morning:—. Te Ao Kate Tohara, for breaking and entering, 12 months’ imprisonment, Andrew Jacob, horse-stealing, to come up for sentence when called upon, prisoner being in an advanced stage of consumption ; James Swan, theft of a cheque, to come up for sentence when called upon, and to pay £ll. WELLINGTON, last night. Mr Justice Edwards sentenced G. W. Palmer, witli a long array M aliases, to two years’ imprisonment on five charges of horse-stealing at iVanganui : and Michael Paven to tim e months’ imprisonment for perjury, cumulative upon the term lie is now serving. CHRISTCHURCH, last nieht. In the Supreme Court to day, in the case against Matthew Garnett for keeping a betting-house, the yury, after retiring for forty minutes, returned a verdict of not guilty,
