AUSTRALIANS V. SURREY
FLAY STOPPED BY RAIN
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, May 12. The Australians commenced the third match of their tour against Surrey at the Oval to-day. Owing to rain, play was not started till 4 o'clock. The Australians won the toss, and began batting. The wicket was soft. Trumble, Jones, and Kelly are standing out of the Australian team, and Baker is omitted from the Surrey eleven. Duff and Trumper opened, but the former only scored eight when Richardson dismissed him with a yorker. One wicket for 18. Trumper at 26 had a life at Hayward’s hands in the slips, off Richardson. Hill joined the Sydneyite, and the latter gave a fine display of vigorous hitting. Rain set in, and the stumps were drawn. One wicket for 87. The Australians were the guests of the Surrey Club at a dinner at lvennington Oval. Lord Alverstone presided. The guests included the Agents-General and some of the best-known names in the cricket world past and present. Lord Alverstone proposed “ The Australian Team.” He said thero was little doubt our colonial friends no longer came to learn but to teach us cricket, and we were proud of our tutor. He wished them good luck. Mr Darling, in reply, expressed hearty thanks, and wishes to see all the test matches played out. Major Wardill looked for the Australians to prove quite as strong as the 1898 team. Surrey had always been first to extend them a welcome. They were much indebted to Mr Alcock for the arrangement of the programme. The question of the appointment of umpires for the test matches had been most satisfactorily settled.
Mr A. G. Steel thought test matches ought to be finished but to allow more than three days would dislocate other cricket.
Mr Noble proposed tho health of Mr Alcock. The Australians have been invited to stay during their visit to Oxford at Aubrey Harcourt’s, Minehem Park.
