NUHAKA NORTH.

[Times’ Correspondent.]

The weather daring the past month has been exceptionally wet, consequently the roads are in a bad state. The TarewaGisborno road is very bad in places, the water-tables being blocked, and the surface water allowed to wash out deep ruts in many parts of the road. It is surprising that the Cook County Council do not engage competent men to look after the road. There are also numerous slips on the newly-formed portion of the Maraetaharoad, which, if not attended to, will oause serious damage. The rivers have been unfordable, and the mail coach has been delayed several times in consequence. Mr Mason has recently paid a visit to the district for the purpose of selecting fat sheep for the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ freezing-works, but, owing to so much rain, the stock are not looking as fit as they did a month ago, and settlers all round are complaining that the sheep have not fattened well this season. Wild do"s are also reported to be doing mischief amongst the flocks in some of the back-block sections. A herd of store cattle, numbering about 200, passed through this district on May sth, en route from Daonovirke to Gisborne. The local sportsmen have been busy potting pigeons since the opening of the season. The birds are in good condition, and -both pheasants and pigeons are reported to be plentiful. It is stated that Mr S. Wright, of Nuhaka, has purchased the goodwill of Mr Morgan’s property at the Mahia junction. Mr Wright intends adding to the present buil ling, and applying to the authorities for an hotel license. Several Government experts have during the past few months visited the Morere Hot Springs, for the purpose of inspection prior to preparing plans with the view to improvements. The residents began to think that at last something would be done, but the Springs are still in their primitive state, and it is now rumored that they are likely to remain so.
