Further details received concerning ,the volcanic eruption at Martinique, one of the West India Islands, belonging to the Lesser Antilles, a French colony, show that the appalling affair is far more disastrous than was at first thought to be the case. It is now estimated that fully thirty ■thousand people perished, the number including the Governor, M. Mouttet.
