13y the eruption at Martinique, which is still proceeding, one hundred and Jifty persons iiave been killed.
Martinique is one or the Lesser Antilles ; it is 40 miles long, about 12 miles broad, and has an area of about 380 square, miles and 100,000 inhabitants, of whom only about .10,000 are whites. Tiie island was discovered by the Spaniards in 1493, colonised by the French in 1635, and now belongs ,to that nation. it is of an oval form with much- indented coasts, and is everywhere mountainous, the highest peak, Mount Pelee, being considerably , more than 4000 ft above sea level. There are six extinct volcanoes on the island, one of them with an enormous crater. St. Pierre is the largest town, though' not the capital of the island. It has a good harbor, a cathedral, a college, a botanical garden, and 25,000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1005, and was the birthplace of Josephine, consort of Napoleon I.
